Gunpowder & Sky is an independent global studio, dedicated to creating, marketing and distributing video content unrestricted by form, genre or platform. Gunpowder & Sky collaborates with both emerging and established talent to generate premium video content ranging from 90-second to 90-minute stories on all platforms. With in-house development, production, marketing and distribution capabilities, the company operates as a full 360-studio and oversees a library of over 1500 titles.

Headquartered in Los Angeles, with offices in NY and London, Gunpowder & Sky was founded by Van Toffler, Floris Bauer and Otter Media, a joint venture of AT&T and The Chernin Group.

Company timeline

In January 2016, former CEO of Viacom Media Networks Music Group, Van Toffler, together with Floris Bauer (former Endemol Group) and Otter Media (joint-venture of The Chernin Group and AT&T) formed Gunpowder & Sky, an independent global studio.

In February 2016, Gunpowder & Sky invests in Cut.com, a creator of native digital video content.

In March 2016, Gunpowder & Sky invests in Shareability, a social content company for the digital generation.

In September 2016, FilmBuff, an independent content sales and distribution company, was acquired by Gunpowder & Sky, with FilmBuff being re-branded under the parent company's name.

In November 2016, Gunpowder & Sky launched Dust, a multi-platform destination for binge watchable sci-fi featuring short films, series and behind-the-scenes content from both emerging and established filmmakers.

In January 2017, Gunpowder & Sky acquires Supergravity, an entertainment studio, built for a connected, global audience.

  • Family Blood (2018) - horror film released by Blumhouse Productions.
  • Summer of 84 (2018) - an upcoming American horror film directed by François Simard, Anouk Whissell and Yoann-Karl Whissell. It stars Graham Verchere, Judah Lewis, Caleb Emery, Cory Gruter-Andrew, Tiera Skovbye, and Rich Sommer. Summer of 84 was co-produced by Brightlight Pictures. The film premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.
